Yellow Bean Sauce (tao jiaw, fermented yellow soybean sauce, soybean condiment , yellow bean sauce) is a salty yellow-brown sauce made up of crushed soybeans which is used as a condiment, especialy for Thai chicken on rice (kao mon gy, ข้าวมันไก่). This stongly flavored sauce should be used for stir-frying vegetables and meats or added to Asian soups. Also add to steamed fish to bring out the taste and aroma. It makes a good vegetarian substitute for fish sauce. Once opened, store in the refridgerator for up to one year.
